A fun painting with one of my favorite characters the Iron Giant. Playing with design and stylizing shapes. I'm thinking of doing some more with this guy as he explores different places...AnthonyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12695264176708969398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6157471517731590671.post-46184316669573285912015-01-10T20:44:00.001-08:002015-01-10T20:54:24.969-08:00Playing with Light and Color
I don't usually do any character painting, so this is a practice run at one of my favorite Disnet characters Long John Silver exploring color and light. The pose is based on the maquette of the character. I really enjoyed painting this since its a refreshing change from the everyday, I will def be doing more!

I've had some requests to see some breakdowns for the shot below, so here's an ambient occlusion (AO) pass showing the geo that was modeled for the shot. Very simple geo, I didn't want to spend too much time modeling since I would be painting on top in Photoshop. I rendered light passes and comped it together and textured it in Photoshop.AnthonyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12695264176708969398noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6157471517731590671.post-86801141114086742032014-01-12T00:28:00.000-08:002014-01-12T00:30:14.182-08:00CGMA Matte Painting Class Demo

This was the final demo for my CGMA Matte Painting class, a Star Wars inspired matte painting. This painting was created using a combination of 3D modeled elements that were lit and rendered out of Maya with a few lighting passes then textured using photos in Photoshop and photo reference to complete the shot. Lots of different techniques on this one that could apply to concept work or matte painting.AnthonyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12695264176708969398noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6157471517731590671.post-86723342375582696962014-01-12T00:23:00.001-08:002014-01-12T00:24:10.927-08:00CGMA Matte Painting Master Class

A couple of color studies done for a story moment. I'm in love with old classic western movies, actually it doesn't have to be old anything done really well like True Grit, 3:10 to Yuma etc. anything with cowboys and Indians.
Playing with different palettes and exploring mood, these studies usually take 1-1.5hrs.AnthonyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12695264176708969398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6157471517731590671.post-60890845648234081532013-12-02T23:31:00.003-08:002013-12-02T23:31:46.236-08:00More Color Studies

This is a paint over I did for StarCraft II, playing up the drama and action in the scene. My friend and co-worker Fabio Zungrone (who's an awesome artist!) added a kind of power charge effect that Kerrigan blasts causing all the damage. This is another matte painting I did for Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls cinematic. A different angle that had to have the lighting match the establishing shot matte painting I had done earlier. There's a bridge from the set that leads into the mouth, this is just the matte painting. I had to also do multiple projections onto geometry to accommodate the camera move, this shot had a lot of parallax!AnthonyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12695264176708969398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6157471517731590671.post-18642495554423006892013-09-12T01:52:00.002-07:002013-09-16T22:33:04.862-07:00CGMA Matte Painting Class

This was one of the matte painting shots I did for the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls cinematic at Blizzard. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, I also worked with the awesome Laurent Pierlot to deliver the final shot. The art director on the show Chris Thunig is one of the best I've worked with, his sense of design is ridiculous. I'd like to share this personal project that I worked on with my friend and co-worker Fabio Zungrone. We had some down time and decided we wanted to take on a full CG fly through shot. It took us about 2 months to complete from concept stage to full compositing. Check out the project here with the full shot breakdown: themattedepartment.com
